Challenge 4: Pitfall! (1982, Atari 2600)

Pitfall! took platformers out of the mostly single screen arcade days of Donkey Kong and dropped us into an entire horizontal world to explore. Before side scrolling was possible at home, Pitfall! become the prototypical flip-screen platformer where the screen instantly transitions once you reach the end. Pitfall! lets you roam in any direction and complete the game using any path you’d like, adding a great deal of adventure and player freedom to the genre.

How to Play

Pitfall has 255 screens and 20 treasures you must find within the 20 minute time limit. Traversing on land moves one screen at a time while the underground skips three screens at a time. A common tactic is to run left instead of right to make barrels easier to avoid. The game ends when you die, times up, or you find all the treasures.
