Challenge 10: Pac-Land (1984, Arcade)

Pac-Land throws out deliberate underground spelunking in favor of more familiar fast side-scrolling through colorful environments. Shigeru Miyamoto himself cites it as an influence on Super Mario Bros., although he disputes how much influence was mechanical versus merely visual. Rather than feeling like a direct SMB predecessor, it’s more closely akin to B.C.’s Quest for Tires or Adventure Island. But it brought platforming out of the literal black-backgrounded dark ages, breaking ground for the perhaps better remembered era of scrolling platformers.

How to Play

Run to the end of the level before time runs out. There are 8 trips, made up of 4 short levels each. Start at Trip 9, the game loops back to Trip 5 and gets harder.

Control Action
Left / Right Hold to walk. Double tap to run.
Button Jump

When you have white-outlined boots in the 4th level of each trip, you can jump infinitely.

After jumping off a springboard, keep tapping the direction of movement to temporarily float.
